Associated Health Effects among Residences Near Jeleeb Al-Shuyoukh Landfill
نویسنده
چکیده
Problem statement: There is growing concern about landfill adverse health effects from exposure to landfill emissions. Approach: Airborne dust samples from houses near Jeleeb AlShuyoukh landfill and control residences were analyzed for molds and bacteria and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) each month for one year. Results: The number of mold species was greater in the residences close to Jeleeb Al-Shuyoukh landfill than in the control. A number of additional VOCs irritating to the skin, eyes, or respiratory tract were also found. Conclusion: The results from this pilot study illustrated the diversity of microorganisms and VOCs present in Jeleeb Al-Shuyoukh environment and suggested that analysis of airborne dust may help assess human exposure to microorganisms and chemical compounds. In addition, a cross-sectional study was explored in Jeleeb Al-Shuyoukh and Al-Jahra residence, through a series of door-to-door survey of 451 residents. The findings of the health survey indicated a higher prevalence of dermatological, neuromuscular, respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms among people living in the area surrounding the landfill than among the control group’s participants. Furthermore, the hygienic survey indicated a high amount of airborne dust, bacteria and fungi within the breathing zone of the residences near the landfill.

Health effects of residence near hazardous waste landfill sites: a review of epidemiologic literature.
This review evaluates current epidemiologic literature on health effects in relation to residence near landfill sites. Increases in risk of adverse health effects (low birth weight, birth defects, certain types of cancers) have been reported near individual landfill sites and in some multisite studies, and although biases and confounding factors cannot be excluded as explanations for these find...
متن کاملAssociation between Pesticide Profiles Used on Agricultural Fields near Maternal Residences during Pregnancy and IQ at Age 7 Years
We previously showed that potential prenatal exposure to agricultural pesticides was associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in children, yet the effects of joint exposure to multiple pesticides is poorly understood. In this paper, we investigate associations between the joint distribution of agricultural use patterns of multiple pesticides (denoted as "pesticide profiles") applied ...

Background There is a growing concern that school siting, construction and renovation practices in the United States are inconsistent with efforts to reduce sprawl, encourage compact growth, and increase the sustainability of our built and natural environments. Current practices also undermine efforts to support walking and cycling to school, and to strengthen community-based schools. A range o...
متن کاملIdentifying populations potentially exposed to agricultural pesticides using remote sensing and a Geographic Information System.
Pesticides used in agriculture may cause adverse health effects among the population living near agricultural areas. However, identifying the populations most likely to be exposed is difficult. We conducted a feasibility study to determine whether satellite imagery could be used to reconstruct historical crop patterns. We used historical Farm Service Agency records as a source of ground referen...
